# What is the difference between analytics and a statement?

> What each one is for, and which to open for which question.

A statement is a fixed document for one period. Once your record company publishes it, the figures don't change, and it ends in a balance you get paid from.

Analytics is a view over the same sales data with no period boundary. Nothing here is a document, nothing is owed, and nothing is fixed: change a filter and the numbers change with it.

| Question | Where to look |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------- |
| What am I owed? | Statements |
| What was deducted or paid? | Statements |
| Which track earns most? | Analytics |
| How did this year compare with last? | Analytics |
| Which countries do I sell in? | Analytics |
| What do I send my accountant? | Statements |

Analytics covers royalties and the sales behind them, and nothing else. Costs, advances, payments and manual entries never appear here, which is the main reason its totals aren't the same as a balance.

Both are built from the same published periods, so a period your record company hasn't published yet is missing from both.
