# Which amount is shown next to each statement?

> Why the figure on each period is the closing balance rather than what you earned.

The amount beside a period is its **closing balance**: what you were owed at the end of that period, across all your accounts and contracts. It isn't what you earned during the period.

Expand the period to see how the balance got there:

**Opening balance.** What you were owed when the period started.

**Payments.** What was paid out to you during it.

**Closing Balance.** What you were owed when it ended.

An unpaid balance carries forward, so a quiet period can still show a large amount because an earlier balance is waiting to be paid. A strong period can show a small one because you were paid during it. To see what you actually earned, open the period and look at **Total Royalties**.

Each currency sits on its own line and currencies are never added together. A dash means no figures have been recorded for that period yet.

## Opening the period

Inside the expanded period, the button counts the contracts with a statement in that period, so it reads **1 statement** for a single deal and more as your record company adds contracts. Click **View** to open the statement itself.
