# What do the Transfers columns mean?

> Reading the three transfer columns and the arrows in them.

The three columns under **Transfers** are named after where the money is going: **Contract**, **Account**, **Payee**. They show the same movement from both ends, once as it leaves a row and once as it arrives.

An arrow tells you the direction, and the amount is shown without a sign because a transfer isn't a gain or a loss:

* An outgoing arrow means the amount left this row.
* An incoming arrow means it arrived here.

In a normal period you'll see a contract row with an outgoing amount in **Account**, the account row with the matching incoming amount in the same column, then the account row with an outgoing amount in **Payee** and your payee row receiving it.

**Contract** carries transfers between contracts, which happen when your record company has set up cross contracts. Those can go either way, so the arrow is worth reading rather than assuming.

Hover an amount for a one-line description of what that transfer is.

A transfer only happens when there's a positive balance to move, so an unrecouped contract shows a dash here and keeps its balance for next period.
