Why does the Artists tab show a name I don't recognise?
Where the names come from, and why one artist can appear more than once.
The Artists tab groups by the artist name stored against each track and release in your record company’s repertoire. That name came from the metadata delivered with the music, usually by their distributor.
Three things follow from that.
The name is matched as text. “Nora Lane” and “Nora Lane feat. The Velvet Foxes” are two different rows, because they’re two different strings. A guest credit, a spelling difference or a changed capitalisation all split one artist into several rows.
A name you don’t recognise is usually a credit you’re on. A featured appearance, a remix credit or a production credit puts someone else’s artist name on the track your contract earns from.
Only one name appears when all your repertoire carries the same artist name, which is normal for a single-artist deal. The tab isn’t broken; there’s genuinely one name to group by.
Tracks and releases with no artist name recorded don’t appear on this tab at all, although their earnings still count everywhere else.
If a name is wrong or inconsistent, your record company can correct the repertoire. It isn’t something you can edit, and correcting it doesn’t change any royalty, only how the rows group here.
